Caitlin Cowlen is junior at Loyola University. She read poetry at our November 5th event. Below is one of the poems she read.
Cicadas
The hum of cicadas accumulates
into a deafening chorus
A declaration of their existence.
Together, they proclaim their power.
Where are they?
An invisible army
lingering behind the leaves.
You may forget about them,
but they’re quick to remind you
they’re always there.
hissing, hissing, hissing-
ever present
Fat, crunchy, metallic bug
with mosaic eyes and window wings.
Skin pulled taut over their ribcage
to make that hissing drum
Whispering summer’s secrets
to the setting sun.
